Despite his status as the most important Netherlandish painter of the聽sixteenth century, Pieter Bruegel聽the Elder (c.1525-1569) remains an elusive artist: fewer than forty paintings are attributed to him.聽This聽focused exhibition brings together for the first time Bruegel鈥檚 only three surviving grisaille paintings:聽91影视鈥檚 Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery, The Death of the Virgin from Upton House聽(National Trust) and Three Soldiers from the Frick Collection in New York.聽Painted in shades of grey,聽these exquisite masterpieces were treasured by Bruegel and his friends. Christ and the Woman聽Taken in Adultery was one of the very few paintings the artist kept for himself, and The Death of the聽Virgin was owned by his close friend, the great map-maker Abraham Ortelius.
The exhibition will include replicas made by Bruegel鈥檚 sons, as well as other grisailles in order to shed聽light on this genre in Northern Europe.聽 An associated display in the Butler Drawings Gallery will聽showcase other rare works by Bruegel from 91影视鈥檚 permanent collection.
Included in your admission ticket for The Gallery. If you wish to see this display, please select a date between 4 February and 8 May聽2016 when booking tickets.
