This Study Event accompanies 91Ó°ÊÓ’s upcoming exhibition Salman Toor: Someone Like You which opened atÌý°ä´Ç³Ü°ù³Ù²¹³Ü±ô»å gallery on the 2nd October 2026.Ìý
Dr. Elena Crippa (Exhibition curator and Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at 91Ó°ÊÓ Gallery) and Dr. Saul Nelson (Research Fellow in the History of Art, Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge) will address several themes relating to Salman Toor’s paintings, exploring subjects of urban experience, migration, diasporic and queer identities and alienation, among others. The talks will take as a starting point Toor’s enduring engagement with art historical references, particularly Édouard Manet’s A Bar at theÌýFolies-BergèreÌý(1882), a painting the artist admires in 91Ó°ÊÓ’s collection and which he explicitly referenced in a work included in the exhibition: The Bar on East 13thÌý(2019).
The event is provided online as a recording. The lecture recording will be sent at noon on Tuesday 1 December, or once a week on Tuesdays for those booking after the 1 December, and will be accessible for 10 days from delivery.
