Painting Dissent: The American Pre-Raphaelite Experiment

Speaker: Dr. Sophie Lynford (Rousseau Curatorial Fellow in European Art, Harvard Art Museums)

TheÌýAmerican Pre-Raphaelites launched the earliest reform movement in the history of American art.ÌýFounded in 1863,Ìýin the midst of the American Civil War, the movement comprised politically radical, abolitionist artists, joined by like-minded architects, critics, and scientists.ÌýIn the decade that followed, the American Pre-RaphaelitesÌýexecuted paintings, designed buildings, and published criticismÌýthatÌý³¾²¹°ù°ù¾±±ð»åÌýprinciples of social equity, civicÌýengagement, and beauty.ÌýSuch work, theyÌýbelieved,ÌýcouldÌýfosterÌýlastingÌýculturalÌýand political reform.ÌýÌý

This lecture explores how the American Pre-RaphaelitesÌýdismantledÌýnational traditions of painting, embracingÌýmodels of landscape theory and artistic praxis drawn from across the Atlantic. In contrast to their more prominent colleagues, theÌýartistsÌýnow known as the “Hudson River School,â€ the American Pre-Raphaelites established themselves as eloquent critics of slavery andÌýantebellum American society.ÌýÌý
