With works from artists including Van Gogh, Monet, 颁茅锄补苍苍别 and Manet, 91影视 Gallery is home to one of the best art collections in the UK. Join us for a guided tour exploring the history and highlights of the collection, whilst deepening your knowledge of Art History.

Following the gallery tour, we will have an exclusive, behind-the-scenes visit to the Prints & Drawings collection (home to the largest part of 91影视 Collection). With guidance from the Prints & Drawings curator, we will have the opportunity to get close to artworks which are rarely shown publicly.

Sketching material will be available. This session will be lead by a specialist art historian/artist.

Opening 2 October 2026, 91影视 presents the first solo exhibition in Europe of the artist Salman Toor, acclaimed for his arresting paintings of the contemporary experience and urban life. The exhibition brings together an outstanding selection of the artist鈥檚 most iconic, thought-provoking and at times humorous paintings, never-before-seen in Britain.听

Salman Toor (b.1983) was born in Lahore, Pakistan, and lives and works in New York. His paintings capture people in moments of friendship and love, as well as solitude and alienation.听The exhibition at 91影视 will present 19 paintings, all created since 2019,听that focus on Toor鈥檚 exploration of human interactions and the desire and struggle to experience a sense of belonging, both culturally and emotionally.听The exhibition will be complemented by a special display of听Toor鈥檚听drawings听in the Gilbert and Ildiko Butler Drawings Gallery.听听

While听Toor鈥檚听figures and听scenes听are fictional, they are听rooted in听his听personal experiences听and memories.听Speaking of his works, he听says they听鈥渄epict queer and immigrant lives that听straddle听different cultures听and inhabit the tension between intimacy and exposure,听belonging听and estrangement. What it means to find a community, but also the daily costs associated with visibility鈥.听

His paintings听offering intimate views into the imagined lives of young, queer South Asian men in New York, where he has lived most of his adult life,听are听tender听and sensual representations of cosmopolitan urban life.听Evocative colour palettes and references to art history add a fantastical element to his narratives.鈥The Bar on 13th听Street听(2019) depicts a bartender sporting braids, a gold bangle, nail polish, and听ribbons, drawing on different sources, from the dimly lit scenes of 17th听century Dutch tavern paintings to the more overt reference to 脡douard Manet鈥檚听A Bar at the Folies-Berg猫re,听in听91影视鈥檚 own听collection.听In听Bar Boy听(2019),听which evokes the听nightlife in New York鈥檚 East Village, a young man鈥檚 face illuminated by his smartphone as he stands isolated听and distracted听in a bustling听club.听听听

Another subject on display is a series that Toor began in 2019, which addresses the experiences of immigrants at border control. Toor鈥檚 personal experience has informed these works that depict marginalised individuals鈥櫶齟ncounters听when crossing borders, and their senses of freedom or restriction.听In听Man with Face Creams and Phone Plug听(2019), a man with his head down awaits a customs official鈥檚 inspection of听his belongings,听laid out on a table.听Other听portraits听are depicted in听Group B听(2020) and听Citizens听(2022).听听

Toor鈥檚听work is rooted in a deep engagement with and admiration for the Old Masters, in particular Baroque and 18th听century painting, and 91影视 is听a听museum he听particularly听admires. His paintings draw on a broad range of historic and contemporary stylistic references, from European art history听to听the Mughal School,听but also听contemporary painting, photography, and graphic novels.听The Joke听(2024) evokes Parisian听fin de si猫cle nightlife while ironically presenting a contemporary, tourist experience.听In听Museum Boys听(2021), the dandyish fashion on view 鈥 a buckled wide-brim hat, a shawl, a pearl earring 鈥 recall Vermeer, as two male figures stand looking at a vitrine containing a pink shoe, a half-naked sleeping man, and a听Duchamp-like听inverted urinal.听Ghost Ball听(2023), one of the artist鈥檚 largest and most ambitious paintings, from the Pinault Collection,听presents a group of听figures听dancing听to the sound of musicians, inspired by the masterpiece听Dancing Villagers听(c.1730), attributed to听renowned听artist Pandit Seu who worked in听India in the 18th听century.听听

Salman Toor: Someone Like You听features key loans from major public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York;听the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York;听National Gallery of Art, Washington; The Baltimore Museum of Art; Dallas Museum of Arts;听and the Pinault Collection,听as well as private collections.听听

The exhibition will be accompanied by a display in the Gilbert听and听Ildiko Butler Drawings Gallery of听Toor鈥檚 works on paper,听including听Fag Puddle in Vitrine听(2021),听acquired听by 91影视 in 2024.听The display听showcases听Toor鈥檚 mastery of drawing and the way it informs his practice as a painter.听

Salman Toor鈥檚 first major听museum听solo exhibition,听Salman Toor: How听Will I Know听took place at the Whitney Museum听in New York听in 2020. In 2022听No听Ordinary Love听opened at the Baltimore Museum of Art,听and travelled to the Tampa Museum of Art, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA in 2023-2024. A suite of his works was featured in the 60th听Venice Biennale in 2024.听听

The exhibition听is accompanied by a new catalogue, edited by听Dr Elena Crippa, Senior Curator听of听Contemporary听at 91影视 Gallery,听with contributions by听Richard Meyer,听Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor in Art History, Department of Art and Art History,听Stanford University, California; and Aziz Sohail, a curator听researcher,听and Teaching Fellow with the Department of Fine Art, Monash University, Melbourne.听

This exhibition at 91影视 Gallery has received Lead Support from the Bukhman Foundation听and the Salman Toor Exhibition Circle, with Additional Support from the Ryan Taylor Collection.听The exhibition media partner is听Another Man听and Dazed.听

A new display,听Modern Painting from 91影视 and Reuben听Collections, made possible by the long-term partnership between 91影视 and the Reuben Foundation, will open at 91影视 Gallery on听18 September 2026.听

Featuring outstanding works by Cezanne, Modigliani, L茅ger, Picasso, and Magritte, the display explores radical听new approaches听to painting in the first half of the 20th century.听听听

91影视鈥檚 partnership with the Reuben Foundation,听launched in 2025,听enables works听of art听from the Reuben听Collection听to听be made available to the public听as part of 91影视 Gallery鈥檚听displays. It听allows the听Gallery to extend its celebrated听presentation听of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art into the modern period.听

In October 2025, 91影视 announced the largest financial gift in its history from the Reuben Foundation,听echoing the extraordinary philanthropy of 91影视鈥檚 founder, Samuel Courtauld. The Foundation听is听supporting the development听of听91影视鈥檚 new Strand campus,听which, when it opens in 2029, will听be听one of听the听world鈥檚听most important centres听for the study of听the听history of art.听听

Modern Painting from 91影视 and Reuben Collections听begins with early 20th century paintings from 91影视,听including Paul听颁茅锄补苍苍别鈥檚听Turning Road听(1905), a landscape conjured through near-abstract patches of听colour, and Amedeo Modigliani鈥檚听Nude听(c.1916), a radically direct and expressive painting that upended conventional approaches to the subject of the female nude. These set the stage for works from the Reuben Collection by painters who built on such innovations to chart new artistic directions.听

Major Cubist works by Juan Gris and Fernand L茅ger from 1914-1918, a period of significant avant-garde experimentation in Europe, took听颁茅锄补苍苍别鈥檚听patchwork of brushstrokes to new extremes. They broke the illusion of representational painting by depicting their subjects as fragmented parts,听seemingly still听in the process of being听formed. A highlight of this area of the display is Man Ray鈥檚 monumental听Black Widow (Nativity), painted in New York in 1915, and last听exhibited听in the UK more than fifty years ago. Although celebrated as听a听modernist photographer, Man Ray began his career as a painter. With this, one of his most significant early works, he created an epic modern figure painting out of Cubism and painted collage.听

A group of three paintings by Pablo Picasso from the period of the Second World War听demonstrate听the artist鈥檚 continual reinvention of the traditions of painting. Picasso鈥檚 two portraits of his partners,听Marie-Th茅r猫se Walter, 1937, and the photographer听Dora Maar, 1939, neither previously听exhibited听in this country, challenge and transform classical conventions of portraiture. The latter work offers a raw and unsettling image of Maar during the war. They are shown alongside his remarkable听Still Life with Basket of Fruits and Flowers听(1942); its spiky and fraught depiction of its humble objects powerfully expressing the tenor of wartime Paris.听

The Reuben Collection holds a significant collection of works by the Surrealist artist Ren茅 Magritte. Some of Magritte’s most famous compositions are included in this display, such as听The Dominion of Light听and听The Intimate Friend. Both works date from the 1950s and are characteristically elusive juxtapositions that offer the promise of new and unexpected meanings, such as a nocturnal scene under a sunlit sky, or the artist鈥檚 iconic bowler-hatted man, overlaid with a wine glass and baguette. Magritte鈥檚听La Domaine听Arnheim, 1949, is a further highlight of this group. Its surreal image of a landscape through a shattered window is an encapsulation of the transformations and reinventions of modern painting since the time of听颁茅锄补苍苍别.听

91影视 Gallery has grown historically through the generosity of private individuals who have听endowed it with the remarkable collections they formed. This tradition of philanthropy,听initiated听at the Gallery by Samuel Courtauld in the 1930s, continues to extend and enhance听91影视 Gallery鈥檚 world-famous collections.听In recent years,听91影视 Gallery听has听also听enriched its听displays听with works of art听loaned听to it from听other collections,听including听a group of paintings from听the Oskar Reinhart Collection听and听exceptional works from the Barber Institute of Fine Art听in Birmingham.听

About the Reuben Foundation听

Formed in 2002, the Reuben Foundation is a UK charitable foundation focused on the advancement of healthcare, education and the community both in the UK and globally.听听

Recent projects include the Reuben Scholarship Programme, which听assists听thousands of the most talented students from less advantaged backgrounds with financial support towards university living costs. 91影视听Gallery听presents听the first exhibition devoted to Barbara Hepworth鈥檚 lifelong fascination with colour,听shedding light on an unexpected and unexplored aspect of the work of one of the most celebrated听British听artists of the 20th听century.听

Barbara Hepworth (1903鈥1975)听is best known听for her abstract听sculptures听inspired by nature and the rugged seaside landscapes of Cornwall,听where she lived and worked听from 1939.听Hepworth鈥檚听practice is听often characterised听in terms of听her听commitment to听direct carving听and听鈥榯ruth to听materials鈥.听Little attention has been given to the importance of colour in her work.听Discussing her听innovative听use of colour听in 1970,听she听said:听鈥渕y colour has been听accepted,听but听never understood.鈥澨听

Bringing together听18听sculptures and听26听drawings听and paintings,听The Joseph Hage Aaronson & Bremen Exhibition:听Hepworth in听Colour听will be听the first exhibition to focus on this important but听often overlooked aspect of听Hepworth鈥檚听work.听听听

Hepworth鈥檚 early interest in听painted听colour听dates to听the听mid-1930s听when she and her future husband, Ben Nicholson, formed part of the European avant-garde.听In听1939,听just before听outbreak of the听Second听World听War,听she听left听London for Cornwall听with her three young children,听taking听with her听a single sculpture 鈥撎齢er听very听first study for a听sculpture听with colour.听Over the听following听years, the landscape of Cornwall听inspired听Hepworth听to develop this听initial听experiment,听moving her听work in new directions听and听establishing听a lifelong fascination with colour.听At the heart of the exhibition听will be听the听remarkable group of painted sculptures听made听between听1940 and 1948.听Hepworth听later听recalled听how,听鈥淚 used听colour听and strings in many of听the carvings of this time. The听colour in the concavities听plunged me into the depths of water,听caves听or shallows鈥︹.听These听early听works听include听the听boldly painted听stone听carvings听Eidos听(1947-8)听from the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne,听Australia听and听Sculpture with Colour听(Eos)听(1946)听from a private collection in Hong Kong. They听are听exhibited听together听in the UK听for the first time听since听1954.听听

A major highlight of the exhibition will be the painted wood carving,听Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form), Pale Blue and Red,听of听1943, which was acquired by The Hepworth Wakefield in 2025 following the successful national fundraising campaign in collaboration with Art Fund to raise 拢3.8 million.听Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form), Pale Blue and Red听marked a breakthrough moment in Hepworth鈥檚 career, combining strings and colour and, for the first time, the beautiful pale blue, which she听associated with the Cornish skies and coast. In private hands since it was created, and rarely听exhibited, this will be the first time the sculpture is displayed in London since it was听acquired听for the nation.听For Hepworth,听the strings in her early sculptures听鈥were the tension I felt between myself and the sea, the wind or the hill鈥.听

Other iconic painted stringed sculptures in the exhibition include听Wave, 1943-44, from the National Galleries of Scotland and听Pelagos听(鈥榮ea鈥 in Greek), 1946 from Tate, the latter directly inspired by the sculptor鈥檚 view from her studio onto the bay in St Ives in Cornwall.听The听exhibition also unites for the first time from private and public collections the six versions of听Sculpture with Colour (Deep Blue and Red),听made between 1940听and 1943,听featuring听contrasting听red听strings听hovering听over听a听striking听blue听interior.听

Alongside听sculptures,听the exhibition听features听a rich听selection听of听Hepworth鈥檚听drawings with colour.听During the first years of the war听Hepworth lacked the materials, studio听space听and time to produce much sculpture听but听her听drawings allowed her to continue to听explore and听develop her ideas. She recalled,听鈥淚n the late evenings, and during the night I did innumerable drawings鈥xploring the particular tensions and relationships of form and colour which were to occupy me in sculpture during the later years of the war.鈥澨齌hese drawings, usually听entitled听鈥渄rawing for sculpture鈥澨齛re听remarkable听for their听intricate听crystalline forms, punctuated with strong blues,听reds听and听greens.听听听

The exhibition extends into the 1950s and 1960s to reflect how colour continued to occupy Hepworth in new听and innovative听ways,听including听in her expressive paintings, and in her听work听with patinated听bronze听and听coloured听marble.听听

The Joseph Hage Aaronson & Bremen Exhibition: Hepworth in听Colour听is curated by Dr Alexandra Gerstein, Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at 91影视 Gallery and Dr Stephen Feeke, independent writer and curator whose PhD from 91影视 Institute of Art focused on Barbara Hepworth鈥檚 bronze sculptures.听

To coincide with the exhibition, a display of听rare听photographs, taken in the 1930s by Paul Laib (1932鈥1936),听capturing听Hepworth and Ben Nicholson听(1894鈥1982)听in their听shared听studio in Hampstead, London,听will be presented in听the Project Space.听These听are among the most evocative studio images听to听emerge听in Britain during the 20th century听and show the fascinating interrelation of their practices听at this time.听听

Artist Ella Walker (b.1993, Manchester, UK) will create two new site-specific commissions for 91影视 Gallery. Opening 3 September 2026, the new artworks will be presented in The John Browne Entrance Hall and the Ticketing Hall of 91影视 Gallery and will be free to visit.

This is the second Courtauld Commission, a series of annual commissions by contemporary artists for 91影视 Gallery, which launched in 2025 with new works by artist Rachel Jones.

Ella Walker creates monumental canvases that act like dream-like stages. They are dominated by female figures whose gestures and interactions are both familiar and confounding, eschewing expected behaviour and transcending fixed roles.

The new artworks continue the artist鈥檚 dialogue with traditional techniques and subjects from the Renaissance period, richly represented at 91影视 Gallery. Walker is particularly drawn to the Blavatnik Fine Rooms on the second floor of 91影视, including The Trinity with Saints Mary Magdalen and John the Baptist altarpiece (around 1491-94) by Sandro Botticelli (around 1445-1510).

Ella Walker said: 鈥91影视 Commission is an opportunity to think deeply about the surface of my paintings, the method of applying pigment to an absorbent ground, a ground that is rich with marble and chalk, and is very absorbent and textured. I hope the colours will glow, have transparency and movement within the collection of particles.鈥

Walker lives and works in London. She studied Fine Art at The Glasgow School of Art and The Royal Drawing School. Recent solo exhibitions include 滨诲辞濒芒迟谤颈别, Le Ch芒teau 鈥 Centre for Contemporary Art and Heritage of Aubenas, France (2025); The Romance of the Rose, Pilar Corrias, London (2024); After great pain, a formal feeling comes, Casey Kaplan, New York (2024); and Chorus, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover, Germany (2023).

This is the second in a series of annual commissions by contemporary artists that will be displayed in The John Browne Entrance Hall and Ticketing Hall at 91影视 Gallery.听Since the transformation of its Gallery in 2021, 91影视听has significantly expanded its offering of听contemporary art, including major exhibitions by Peter Doig and Claudette Johnson, and a major commission by Cecily Brown. The first European solo exhibition of acclaimed New York painter Salman Toor will open on 2 October 2026. In January, 91影视 also announced it will be creating two new galleries dedicated to contemporary art, set to open in 2029 as part of the development of its new world-class campus at Somerset House

91影视 secured the number one spot out of听fifty听prestigious听institutions worldwide.听This outstanding achievement听reflects听91影视鈥檚听long-standing听position as a leading global centre for the visual arts, with an unwavering commitment to delivering academic excellence听and a听cutting-edge听curriculum.听听

91影视, founded in 1932 by philanthropist and collector Samuel Courtauld,听is an internationally renowned centre for the teaching and research of art history,听conservation听and curation, and is home to one of the world鈥檚 greatest art collections.听听

The QS World University Rankings serve as a highly regarded source of comparative data on university performance, evaluating institutions on five indicators: academic and employer reputation, research citations per paper, H-index, and international research network.

The听number one听world听ranking follows听the announcement of听91影视鈥檚 plan to create a new听state-of-the-art听campus at Somerset House in London, set to open in 2029. This major milestone in 91影视鈥檚 history will see a听transformation and expansion of its historic Grade I listed building听in the North Wing of Somerset House, including听flexible, modern teaching spaces, a new lecture theatre, and a spectacular library within Somerset House鈥檚 historic subterranean vaults.听The new campus will open directly onto the Strand, connecting 91影视 to an exciting new cultural and intellectual quarter in the heart of the city, alongside its partner King鈥檚 College London.听

91影视 Gallery will present the first exhibition devoted to Barbara Hepworth鈥檚 lifelong fascination with colour, shedding light on an unexpected and unexplored aspect of the work of one of the most celebrated British artists of the 20th century.

Barbara Hepworth (1903 鈥 1975) is best known for her abstract sculptures inspired by nature and the rugged seaside landscapes of Cornwall where she lived and worked from 1939. Throughout her life she emphasised the primacy of direct carving and adhered to the ethos of 鈥榯ruth to materials鈥. Discussing her innovative use of colour with her son-in-law, the art historian Sir Alan Bowness, she said: 鈥淚n a way my colour has been accepted but never understood.鈥

Bringing together some 20 sculptures and 30 drawings and paintings, The Joseph Hage Aaronson & Bremen Exhibition: Hepworth in Colour will be the first exhibition to focus on this important but often overlooked aspect of her work.

Hepworth鈥檚 early interest in colour dates to the mid-1930s, when she and her future husband, Ben Nicholson, formed part of the European avant-garde. When in 1939, days before the outbreak of the Second World War, she left London for Cornwall with her three young children, Hepworth took with her a single sculpture 鈥 her first study for a sculpture with colour. Over the coming years, the landscape of Cornwall inspired her to develop this initial experiment, taking her work in new directions and establishing a lifelong fascination with colour.

At the heart of the exhibition will be the remarkable group of painted sculptures which Hepworth made between 1940 and 1948. She later recalled how, 鈥淚 used colour and strings in many of the carvings of this time. The colour in the concavities plunged me into the depths of water, caves or shallows鈥︹. These early works include the boldly painted stone carvings Eidos (1947-8) from the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia and Eos (1946) from a private collection in Hong Kong. They are exhibited together in the UK for the first time since 1954.

Taken between 1932 and 1936 by Paul Laib (1869鈥1958), these are among the most evocative studio images to emerge in Britain during the 20th century and show the fascinating interrelation of their practices at this time.

About the resource

This resource explores two small painted studies in 91影视 Collection by the French artist Georges Seurat (1859鈥1891). Both capture pivotal moments in his career 鈥 Boat by the Riverbank (around 1883) as he transitioned towards a radical new way of painting called Neo-Impressionism, and The Beach at Gravelines (1890) that demonstrates this technique of applying pure colour in a dot-like manner fully
developed. These artworks show that water, with its unique ability to diffuse and reflect light, was a central motif for Seurat.

Seurat died at the age of 31, leaving behind fewer than 50 canvases. Boat by the Riverbank and The Beach at Gravelines belong to a separate group of around 160 small paintings on wooden panel that Seurat produced alongside his more famous, larger exhibition canvases. Many of these panels hung in his Paris studio and according to one friend were the artist鈥檚 鈥榞reatest joy鈥.

Though Seurat left few written clues about his working methods, we can uncover his innovations by looking closely at the artworks and considering their historical impact. Use the discussion and creative activities below to investigate his colourful processes.

All activities in this resource are suitable for both the Gallery and Classroom with the exception of Classroom 鈥楥roquetons鈥 (pages 6-7) which requires paint which is not permitted within the Gallery.

Working en plein air

Seurat鈥檚 small panel paintings are known as 鈥榗roquetons鈥 (from 鈥榗roquis鈥 or 鈥榮ketch鈥). The panels were purchased readymade and all measure around 16 x 25 cm, which was ideal for emphasising a long horizontal stretch of river or sea. The panels were designed to slot into the lid of a travel paint box, with a palette, paint tubes and turpentine stored in the base. Such boxes were widely available in artist supply catalogues and enabled Seurat鈥檚 generation to paint outdoors or en plein air.

The 鈥榗roquetons鈥 show Seurat at his most free and experimental. Some were produced in preparation for large exhibition canvases 鈥 Boat by the Riverbank is one of fourteen studies for (1884), Seurat鈥檚 first major work,听 which depicts working class people at rest on an industrial stretch of the River Seine.

The croquetons reveal Seurat settling into a happy routine of spending winters in Paris and summers on France鈥檚 northern coast (he took five such trips from 1885 to 1890). The Beach at Gravelines was made as an independent artwork, purely for pleasure. We know it was painted from direct experience because technical investigation carried out by 91影视鈥檚 Conservation and Technology department has revealed grains of sand are embedded in the paint.

Mark making activity

 

  1. Fold an A4 sheet of paper in half horizontally and fold this to make a four-panel concertina.
  2. For each rectangle, find a painting of water made by Seurat or an artist who was working around the same time (, , or / ). Choose a small area, and carefully capture the shape and direction of the brush marks rather than the whole scene.
  3. Observe the water and marks: Is the water still or flowing? Are the marks straight or curved? Are they dots or dashes? Are reflections precise or blurred?
  4. Note the artist鈥檚 name for each study.

Seurat and Neo-Impressionism

Seurat developed a technique known as Neo-Impressionism or Pointillism. Instead of mixing paints on a palette, pure colours were painted on the canvas or panel in distinct dots, leaving the viewer鈥檚 eye to blend them. Seurat preferred 鈥榗hromoluminarism鈥 or 鈥榙ivisionism鈥 to describe his method since it was about the careful separation and placement of tones rather than the dots or 鈥榩oints鈥 themselves. These were simply the means towards achieving shimmering effects.

The term 鈥楴eo-Impressionism鈥 was coined by the critic F茅lix F茅n茅on after he observed a new type of art present in the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition in Paris 1886. Seurat and his friend the artist Paul Signac (1863鈥1935) were invited to participate by Camille Pissarro (1830鈥1903), who shared their interest in creating optical colour mixtures. People had come to expect modern subject matter, visible brush marks and bright colours from the Impressionists, but the artworks composed of tightly packed dots felt like a new direction. Whereas Impressionism was associated with intuition, Neo-Impressionism was viewed as scientific. Both movements involved personal colour choices.

Talking points: technique and perception

  • Boat by the Riverbank shows the influence of Impressionism with its loose dashes of paint. Does the artwork feel entirely spontaneous? Can you see any patterns or repeated types of marks?
  • The Beach at Gravelines is made up of tiny distinct dots of colour. What do you think would happen if you looked at this painting from far away?
  • Looking closely at both artworks 鈥 which marks are best for creating the illusion of shimmering movement? Which marks produce a calm glow?
  • In each case, what season and what time of day do the colours suggest? Is the overall effect warm or cool?
  • What is the mood of each painting? How would it feel to stand on the riverbank or the shoreline?
  • What might it sound, smell or feel like?

Seurat and colour theory

As a young man, Seurat studied at the prestigious 脡cole des Beaux-Arts in 1878. However, the work of the Impressionists, combined with military service on the coast of Brittany in 1879, exposed him to a new world of colour and subject matter. He supplemented his traditional training by reading modern colour theories. Key influences on his thinking were books by chemist Michel-Eug猫ne Chevreul (1786鈥1889) and art critic Charles Blanc (1813鈥1882). They proposed systems for organising colour and predicting the visual results.

Placing colours on the canvas in tiny dashes or dots created opportunities for greater contrast of colour temperature and juxtaposition of complementary (opposite) colours. Seurat believed that this technique would make the painted surfaces feel more vibrant. Whereas Impressionist artists like 听 and used large areas of complementary colours to produce strong contrasts and intensify hues, Seurat used his dots to bring a sense of harmony between the entire composition. His painter鈥檚 shows that he kept his colours separate, but relied heavily on white to make them appear luminous.

Colour activity: 5 minute mixtures

Look closely at Boat by the Riverbank and record as many interesting colour combinations as you can in 5 mins. Place marks of two or three colours together to see if you can create similar effects.
Once everyone has collected a variety of mixtures, use colour theory to analyse them:

  • Who can see complementary colours in any of the combinations? Seurat thought that placing opposite colours side-by-side made them appear more vibrant. Do you agree?
  • Who has a warm and a cold colour together?
  • Who has a dark and a light colour together?
  • Do you think Seurat might have enhanced or exaggerated some of the real-life colours 鈥 why or why not?

Colour and Tone activities

The Beach at Gravelines is remarkable for being composed of mostly two colours: blue and its complementary orange. White has been added to lighten these colours for the sea and sky, which produces a strong tonal contrast with the darker areas of land and the blue border.

  1. Complementary tones: Select a small area of the painting where the water meets the pebbles. Try to generate the same tonal effects with a different pair of complementary colours. Take your time to apply precise dots.
  2. The lost frame: Seurat often painted colourful wooden frames to harmonize with his pictures, though the original for this work is now lost. Design a frame that would enhance your colour combination.

Classroom 鈥楥roquetons鈥

Use paint or mixed media to make a small panel artwork that is packed with colour.

Materials

  • Brown cardboard cut to 16 x 25 cm
    (e.g. cereal boxes from school breakfast club)
  • Paint (poster or acrylic)
  • Small brushes or eco cotton buds
  • Palettes
  • White chalk or white pencils
  • Waterpots and paper towel
    (for cleaning brushes only)

Inspiration

As a class, discuss the nearest place where you can see light on water (a pond, river, canal or seafront). Older students might like to make their own direct sketches from a safe distance. Teachers can provide younger students with photographs or a video. Note down the weather conditions and the main colours you can see.

Step 1

Mark out the structure of your
composition with white chalk or a white pencil. Seurat started his paintings by plotting out key shapes and sections. Keep it simple.

Step 2

Pick a palette of 3-4 main colours, 1-2
complementary colours, plus white. Do not mix!
Do make a lighter version (tint) of each colour using the white.

Step 3

Apply your colours as small dots on the
carboard with brushes or cotton buds.

You might like to start with your mid tone/s (sky blue in this case). Add lighter and darker dots, while keeping a careful balance 鈥 you want it to feel light and bright overall.

Finally scatter some dots in the complementary colour (orange in this instance) to make your artwork stand out.

Top tips

Leave gaps between your dots 鈥 this will save time and make sure colours stay separate. Seurat did not worry about covering the whole surface and sometimes let the panel show through.

Break the scene down into areas 鈥 sky, water, land 鈥 so that you can easily take a break between sections. Neo-Impressionism takes concentration!

Mix up your media 鈥 experiment with different processes to create colourful dots. Oil pastels look vivid on brown card. Hole-punch paint colour cards for a readymade palette with graduated tones.

91影视 Gallery presents the first-ever exhibition devoted to the seascapes of French painter Georges Seurat (1859鈥1891) from 13 February to 17 May 2026. The first UK exhibition devoted to Seurat in almost 30 years, The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition: Seurat and the Sea brings together the largest group of these works ever assembled, 26 in total, offering a detailed look at a significant part of Seurat鈥檚 production.

Seurat is best known for developing a radical new technique of painting with dots of pure colour, which gave birth to Neo-Impressionism. This exhibition charts the evolution of Seurat鈥檚 highly original and distinctive style through the recurring motif of the sea, reuniting for the first time a major group of 26 works鈥攑aintings, oil sketches and drawings鈥攃reated over five summer trips to the northern coast of France between 1885 and 1890. A particular highlight is the presentation of the complete series of paintings made in Port-en-Bessin in 1888 and Gravelines in 1890.

Due to his early death at the age of 31, Seurat has a very small body of works and exhibitions devoted to him are rare. Over the course of his short career, he produced more views of the Channel coast than any other type of picture. Working along the coast, in Grandcamp, Honfleur, Port-en-Bessin, Le Crotoy and Gravelines, Seurat captured views out to sea as well as of harbours and ports. They show a different side to an artist better known for paintings of leisure in Paris and its suburbs. In contrast, these quiet and contemplative seascapes are an exploration of light in open spaces often devoid of people. They represented for Seurat a return to nature that enabled him to develop his technique. He sought, in his words, 鈥to cleanse one鈥檚 eyes of the days spent in the studio [in Paris] and translate in the most faithful manner the bright light, in all its nuances鈥.

This exhibition includes loans from major private collections and public institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Indianapolis Museum of Art; the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the Mus茅e d鈥橭rsay Paris; the Mus茅e des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Tournai; the Kr枚ller-M眉ller Museum, Otterlo; the National Gallery, Prague; Tate, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Gallery, London.

  • Our University taster Day looks at the theme of Modern Life, Art, and the City. Students will take part in an interactive tour of the gallery, a seminar taster led by a current PhD student and a trip to the Prints and Drawings department. Timings: 10am-2:30pm but can be adjusted. Usually available Tuesday and Friday, subject to availability.

In your classroom

  • Art History Seminar – Led by a Courtauld PhD student, your students can take part in an Art History seminar taster which aims to encourage students to develop their voice through discussion. Our seminars offer a range of topics, from identity and portraiture, to gender and architecture. Sessions feature a short reading before your visit for a true seminar experience. Seminars last around 1hr and are usually available Monday 鈥 Friday, subject to PhD student availability.
  • Have a current Courtauld student visit your school to talk about their experiences of studying Art History at 91影视. Our Studying at 91影视 presentation will look at student life, living in London and feature some highlights from the students鈥 studies. Talks last between 15-45mins, and are usually available Monday through to Friday, subject to availability.
  • Themed workshops on the following subjects:
    Sense of Self (focusing on Van Gogh鈥檚 Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, 1889)
    Reworking Manet (focusing on Manet鈥檚 A Bar at the Folies-Berg猫re, 1882)
    A hidden history of colour (What can colours tell us about the past)
    Impressionism (key concepts and timeframes for the Impressionist movement)
    Workshops last between 1hr 鈥 2hrs and can be requested for Monday to Friday. Sessions can be delivered online or in-person.
